The schedule for ‘kid showers’ in our home is Emerson at night and Waverly in the morning. Although that has been the plan for years (literally), Emerson protests almost every night. “Awwww, c’mon! Why do I have to take a shower???” A seemingly obvious answer for a boy who is days away from turning eight years old.
It’s as if he has forgotten how hard he played all day…or the fact that he rolled around in the sand at school…or that he has enough dirt under his nails to pot a plant. He is barely aware of the layer of gunk that has built up within a single day. Not much different than you or me.
The truth is that the busyness of life allows grime to accumulate in the crevices of our souls, and callouses develop over time from all our challenging circumstances. Instead of feeling refreshed and energized, many of us find ourselves with that post-camping funkiness…maybe not on the outside, but definitely on the inside. Our relationships become strained, our work suffers from a lack of creativity, and our momentum in life is lost completely.

We need to be refreshed to regain our momentum!

Change Your Brain, Change Your Life: The Breakthrough Program for Conquering Anxiety, Depression, Obsessiveness, Anger, and Impulsiveness
Almost three years ago, I picked up this book in anticipation of getting a brain scan through the Amen Clinic – run by the author of this incredible resource. As a clinical neuroscientist and psychiatrist, Amen uses nuclear brain imaging to diagnose and treat behavioral problems. In this easy-to-read book, he explains how the brain works, what happens when things go wrong, and how to optimize brain function. As you self-identify your own challenges through the process, he provides “brain prescriptions” including cognitive exercises and nutritional advice. Loved the book and ended up getting the brain scan. The whole experience has changed my life.
